India Sees Trillions in Wealth Transfer
20 Aug
Summary
- Over $1 trillion expected in intergenerational wealth transfer.
- Family wealth becoming institutionalized with formal governance.
- Alternatives market may exceed $2 trillion by 2034.

India is on the cusp of a major intergenerational wealth transfer, with projections indicating that between $1.3 trillion and $1.5 trillion will shift hands within the next ten years. This substantial movement of assets is fostering greater institutionalization of family wealth.
Family offices are increasingly adopting formal governance structures, moving away from founder-centric decision-making. They are establishing investment committees, family councils, and advisory boards, while also hiring dedicated chief investment officers and risk managers. This professionalization is extending to their investment portfolios, with growing allocations to alternative assets.
The alternatives market in India, currently valued around $400 billion, is expected to experience explosive growth, potentially surpassing $2 trillion by 2034. This surge is fueled by rising high-net-worth individual participation, supportive policies, and a demand for assets offering higher yields and lower correlation to traditional markets.
India's landscape of ultra-high-net-worth individuals is also expanding rapidly. The country had over 200 billionaires in 2026, ranking third globally, and more than 19,000 individuals with assets exceeding $30 million. These numbers are projected to climb, with over 25,000 such individuals expected by 2031, driven by lucrative exits and liquidity events from businesses.
