Climate Founders Unite: India's SusMafia Network Grows

The Sustainability Mafia (SusMafia), a Bengaluru-based non-profit network, is fostering collaboration among Indian climate startup founders. Established under the Sustainability Engine Foundation, it addresses the isolation faced by entrepreneurs across sectors like clean energy and circular economy.

SusMafia operates as an "ecosystem of ecosystems," centering founders and facilitating access to business, capital, and talent. Initiatives include Climate Ninja for talent development, Corporados for connecting founders with businesses, and SusVentures for early-stage support and investor introductions.

The network's annual SusCrunch gathering, with over 350 attendees expected in 2026, provides a platform for networking, product showcases, and business matchmaking. Previous events have led to significant outcomes, including funding raises and key hires.

SusMafia measures success beyond event attendance, tracking customer introductions, hiring, and investments. Member companies collectively generate over Rs 2,100 crore in annual revenue and have raised more than $350 million, while also achieving substantial environmental benefits.

The Climate Ninja program, with academic partnerships, aims to build a broader climate-literate workforce. Membership is selective, requiring growth-stage companies in India's climate sector to demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the community.

Looking ahead, SusMafia advocates for government procurement reforms to support scaling climate startups, with a broader vision to make sustainability the default choice for all.
