India's Solar Shift: Rooftop Power Surges

India's solar energy expansion is entering a new phase, marked by a significant increase in rooftop and distributed solar projects. This shift comes as utility-scale solar faces growing scrutiny regarding grid absorption and curtailment issues. Rooftop solar additions in August 2026 nearly doubled compared to the previous year, indicating a strong new growth engine.

While overall solar capacity additions remain robust, the composition is changing. Ground-mounted projects, once dominant, now represent a smaller share of new capacity. Regulators are increasingly focused on the effective integration of renewable energy into the power system, moving beyond just low tariffs.

The utility-scale solar model confronts challenges like surplus generation during peak solar hours and limited transmission capacity. Consequently, tenders are now favoring solar-wind hybrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and dispatchable renewable power to ensure reliability.

This evolving landscape signifies a move towards a more balanced and integrated renewable energy system. The focus is shifting from simply adding capacity to ensuring that new capacity is usable and reliably integrated, with storage and hybrid solutions playing a critical role.
