Rupee Soars: RBI Intervenes to Shield Currency
13 Oct
Summary
- RBI redirected oil companies' dollar purchases from the spot market.
- New measures curb corporate demand for forward dollars.
- The rupee is down 6.6% year-to-date despite recent gains.
The Indian rupee experienced a significant rebound, appreciating by nearly 1% on Monday, October 12. This surge followed decisive actions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to stabilize the currency.
The RBI redirected substantial dollar purchases by oil companies away from the spot market. Additionally, measures were introduced to curb corporate demand for forward dollars, a key factor in recent depreciation pressures.
These interventions aim to manage two primary sources of pressure: consistent dollar demand from oil marketers amidst high crude prices and corporate hedging against further rupee weakness. Despite the recent gains, the rupee has depreciated by 6.6% year-to-date.
Analysts suggest these near-term measures may lead to initial rupee appreciation, followed by consolidation. However, they caution that underlying balance of payments pressures remain unaddressed.
The RBI's strategy shift focuses on managing dollar demand and speculative positioning, especially after a recent rate hike failed to deliver expected relief. Market watchers will observe if these steps translate into sustained reduced spot-market dollar demand.
Global energy market dynamics also play a role, with potential supply constraints from Russia impacting refined fuel availability and prices. Any sustained decline in crude prices could ease India's import bill and dollar demand, further supporting the rupee.
Meanwhile, weak consumer sentiment in the US, evidenced by a drop in the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index, could influence the dollar. However, inflation data and Federal Reserve policy will be critical factors. A moderation in US inflation could weaken the dollar, offering relief to emerging market currencies like the rupee.
Strategists anticipate the USD/INR pair to trade within the ₹94-₹97 range. The RBI is expected to be particularly vigilant if the pair approaches ₹96.50, with its recent measures likely to help contain pressure around the ₹96.00-₹96.50 zone.
