Rupee Crisis Looms: India's Import Bill Threatens 150/$
17 May
Summary
- India's rupee may fall to 150 per dollar due to import reliance.
- The nation is becoming a consumer economy, not a manufacturing one.
- Energy import dependence has risen significantly, nearing 95%.

Entrepreneur Jayant Mundhra has cautioned that India's rupee could weaken to 150 against the US dollar if import dependence is not addressed. He asserts India is increasingly becoming a consumer economy, importing vast quantities of goods, technology, and energy, which drains its currency.
Mundhra highlighted that energy import dependence has climbed from approximately 83% to nearly 89%, with a projection of reaching 95% if actions are not taken. He criticized the celebration of foreign tech companies, stating India should prioritize developing its own alternatives to prevent billions from flowing out.
He pointed to countries like China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, which focused on domestic manufacturing before export success. Praising states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu for industrial policies, Mundhra stressed the need for aggressive investment in domestic exploration, mining, manufacturing, and technological self-reliance to secure the rupee and achieve economic power.
