India's Luxury Car Buyers Ditch Gas for Electric
26 Jul
Summary
- Nearly half of cars over Rs 30 lakh sold are electric or hybrid.
- Premium car buyers now evaluate multiple propulsion technologies.
- Luxury EVs are increasingly chosen as primary household vehicles.

Electrified vehicles are on the cusp of outselling petrol and diesel models in India's premium car segment. This year, nearly one in two passenger vehicles registered above Rs 30 lakh has been a battery electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid model, indicating a significant change in buyer preferences. Three years ago, electrified vehicles represented about one-tenth of this segment, but now they account for 49.1% of registrations from January to May 2026, according to Jato Dynamics.
This accelerated shift is driven by wider availability of hybrid and battery electric models, advancements in technology, and growing consumer confidence. Buyers are increasingly prioritizing performance, refinement, ownership experience, and sustainability over traditional fuel choices. Carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and BMW are responding by expanding their electrified portfolios and adjusting investment plans for India, reflecting a global trend towards electric mobility.
