AI & Big Data Boost India's Power Sector Efficiency

The Indian power sector is experiencing a significant transformation, driven by technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence and big data analytics, according to CAG K Sanjay Murthy. These technologies are enhancing the sector's ability to address inherent complexities. The generation capacity has seen substantial growth, increasing from 1,168 BU in 2015-16 to 1,824 BU in 2025-26.
A notable shift towards green energy is evident, with its share in the energy mix rising from 6% to 24%. This green transition is complemented by a 70% augmentation of the transmission network, now exceeding 5 lakh circuit kilometers. Village and household electrification have also seen marked improvements.
Encouragingly, the financial health of Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) is showing signs of recovery. DISCOMs reported a Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 2,701 crore in 2024-25, highlighting improved operational efficiencies and financial sustainability, which are crucial for the sector's overall strength.
