India's Growth Surges: Forecasts Skyrocket!
24 Sep
Summary
- Multiple global institutions raise India's FY27 growth forecasts.
- Strong domestic demand and investment drive economic optimism.
- Risks include geopolitical uncertainty and potential El Niño impacts.

Multiple global financial institutions have broadly upgraded India's economic growth outlook for fiscal year 2027. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), S&P Global Ratings, and Fitch Ratings have all raised their forecasts, anticipating strong domestic demand, increased investments, and enhanced export performance. The OECD now projects 7.1% growth for FY27, a notable increase from its previous 6.3% estimate.
The ADB has revised its growth estimate to 7%, up from 6.6%, citing robust public investment and resilience in key export sectors. This optimism is supported by strong high-frequency indicators, including significant growth in gross fixed capital formation, corporate sales, and exports in the June quarter. Continued strength in the services sector, particularly AI-related investments, along with manufacturing and agricultural gains, is expected to sustain this momentum.
Despite the positive trends, certain risks loom over India's economic trajectory. Prolonged geopolitical uncertainties and the potential impact of El Niño on agricultural production have been identified as key concerns by the ADB and OECD. Furthermore, the OECD noted that reduced purchasing power might temporarily weigh on growth in the latter half of the current year before a gradual recovery is expected in 2027.
Inflation remains a point of attention, currently within the Reserve Bank of India's target range, though upward pressures from energy and food prices are being monitored. Forecasts for FY27 inflation range from 4.7% to 5.5%. In response to potential inflationary pressures, S&P Global Ratings, the ADB, and the OECD anticipate a policy rate hike by the RBI during the current fiscal year.
