India's Fertilizer Subsidy Bill Skyrockets to ₹3.4 Lakh Crore
12 Jun
Summary
- Fertilizer subsidy bill to reach ₹3.4 lakh crore by 2026-27.
- India's fertilizer approval process is lengthy, taking over 800 days.
- Government plans to simplify regulations for non-subsidized crop nutrients.

India's Union government anticipates its fertilizer subsidy bill for 2026-27 will reach ₹3,40,000 crore, significantly exceeding the budgeted amount and surpassing previous records. This surge is prompting a review of regulations governing crop nutrient products.
The current approval process for new fertilizers, whether subsidized or non-subsidized, is a complex and time-consuming procedure involving registration, extensive field trials, and committee reviews. This can take over 800 days, contrasting sharply with much shorter timelines in countries like the US and Vietnam.
To address this, the government is considering simplifying the approval for non-subsidized fertilizers by exempting products that meet established quality and safety standards from mandatory field trials. This reform, nearing in-principle agreement, aims to expedite market entry for innovative products.
The move aligns with the growing market for specialty crop nutrition products, including water-soluble fertilizers (WSFs) and micronutrients. Companies like Yara Fertilisers and DCM Shriram are already offering advanced solutions that enhance nutrient use efficiency compared to traditional fertilizers like urea and DAP.
