US-Russia Vie for India's Energy Market

India's growing energy demands have positioned it as a key battleground for the U.S. and Russia, two geopolitical adversaries vying for greater influence in the world's third-largest energy market. As of August 2026, Russia is the largest crude oil supplier to India, a position solidified since the start of the Iran war. In contrast, the U.S. has become India's top supplier for both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Indian refiners are finding that U.S. crude is typically too light for their processing needs, whereas heavier Venezuelan crude is proving to be a suitable alternative. Imports of Venezuelan crude by India have surged significantly, rising from zero in March to 383,000 barrels per day by August 2026. When combined with U.S. crude imports, supplies from the Americas accounted for approximately 11% of India's crude imports during this period.

While Russia aims to maintain its strong crude supply to India, the U.S. has exerted pressure, including past tariff threats, to encourage New Delhi to reduce its reliance on Russian barrels. The U.S. has also promoted Venezuelan oil as a substitute. Experts suggest that replacing Russian crude supplies would be challenging for India, especially given current constraints in Middle Eastern supply and technical limitations of processing lighter U.S. crude. The upcoming U.S. House vote on a sanctions bill could reintroduce tariff threats, though global supply constraints may limit immediate impacts on India's Russian oil purchases.
