Banking at Your Doorstep: India's BC Revolution
26 Sep
Summary
- Over 1.7 million Business Correspondents serve India's remote banking needs.
- Nearly all inhabited villages have banking access within 5 km.
- BCs offer essential services but do not replace full bank branches.
India's banking landscape extends significantly beyond its physical branches, with Business Correspondents (BCs) forming a critical last-mile infrastructure. As of July 17, 2026, India reported over 1.73 million BCs, complementing approximately 181,000 bank branches and 165,000 India Post Payments Bank centres. This network ensures that 99.92% of the nation's inhabited villages have access to a banking outlet within a five-kilometer radius.
These BCs are authorized agents enabling essential banking services like cash deposits and withdrawals, balance inquiries, and remittances. They are instrumental in reaching areas where conventional branches are scarce, thereby supporting the government's broader financial inclusion goals. While BCs offer convenient access to routine transactions, they are not designed to replace full-service bank branches.
