Summary
- Seven defence manufacturing clusters are being established across India.
- Each cluster will focus on specific aspects of the defence value chain.
- The initiative aligns with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' self-reliance goal.
India is embarking on an ambitious plan to establish seven defence manufacturing clusters across the nation. This initiative is a significant step towards strengthening indigenous defence production and developing specialized regional manufacturing ecosystems.
The proposed clusters will unite state governments, industry players, academia, and research institutions to form integrated defence hubs. Each hub will concentrate on distinct segments of the defence manufacturing value chain, including testing, certification, indigenisation, exports, and skill development.
Karnataka is slated to lead the first cluster, focusing on testing and certification, with Rajasthan as a co-lead and IITs providing academic support. Other clusters will be headed by states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, each with unique specializations from policy reforms to skill development and industrial infrastructure.
This strategic move is a cornerstone of the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, aiming for self-reliance in defence and positioning India as a major exporter of defence equipment. The clusters are expected to foster research, manufacturing, and innovation, ultimately reducing import dependency and enhancing the country's defence industrial base.
