India's three-row electric vehicle market is rapidly expanding, with sales showing remarkable growth. This segment, featuring larger family-oriented SUVs and MPVs, is poised for further expansion with new launches expected.
Sales data reveals a dramatic increase, with three-row battery EVs surging from 190 units in calendar year 2024 to 5,783 units in 2025. The momentum continued into 2026, with 17,492 units sold between January and May, nearly tripling the previous year's total.
This shift has led to three-row EVs capturing 14.9% of India's electric passenger vehicle market by May 2026, up from 2.8% in 2025. Seven-seater models constitute the vast majority of these sales.
Mahindra currently leads this segment, with its XUV 9S achieving 14,149 retail sales from January to May 2026, securing an 80.9% market share. Kia's Carens EV and BYD's eMax 7 also hold positions in the market.
The data also indicates a trend of premiumization, with vehicles priced between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 35 lakh accounting for nearly 78% of sales. This suggests consumers are willing to invest more for the increased space, range, and features offered by larger electric vehicles.
With manufacturers like Tata Motors, MG Motor India, and Maruti Suzuki preparing to launch new three-row EV models, the competition is expected to intensify. The Safari EV, for instance, could become a pivotal model for Tata Motors, provided it offers competitive pricing and a strong range.
As more mainstream players enter the three-row EV space, this segment is projected to become a key growth driver for India's overall electric passenger vehicle market, reflecting a growing consumer preference for practical family mobility solutions.
