Indian Railways: Clean Toilets On All Long-Distance Trains!
14 Feb
Summary
- Toilets in general coaches will now be cleaned every 1-2 hours.
- Continuous cleaning model replaces 'clean train station' concept.
- New reforms aim to generate Rs 30,000 crore additional revenue.

Indian Railways has introduced major reforms to enhance on-board services, with a primary focus on improving toilet hygiene in long-distance trains. For the first time, toilets in general unreserved coaches will be cleaned regularly, approximately every 1-2 hours, a significant upgrade from the previous system.
The "clean train station" concept is being replaced by a continuous cleaning model, ensuring that hygiene is maintained from the train's origin to its destination. This approach will address continuous cleaning of toilets, garbage bins, cabin interiors, and minor defects throughout the journey.
These initiatives are part of the "52 Reforms in 52 Weeks" target for 2026. Initially, around 80 high-patronage long-distance trains will adopt these on-board service reforms within six months, with a phased rollout across all trains over three years.
Professional, technology-enabled teams will be engaged with strict Service Level Agreements for cleaning frequency. Additionally, reforms in the cargo terminal segment are projected to generate approximately Rs 30,000 crore in new revenue over the next three years through Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals.
