Overseas weddings are significantly altering travel patterns for Indians, leading to a notable increase in travel insurance. Policybazaar data reveals a 27.4% year-on-year rise in insurance purchases for destination weddings, with a similar increase observed in 2025 year-to-date. This trend highlights the growing mainstream appeal of international weddings for Indian families.
Thailand, the UAE, and Europe are the preferred locations for these extended, multi-generational celebrations. The surge in demand for wedding-linked travel insurance, which closely follows India's wedding seasons rather than traditional holiday periods, underscores increased awareness of travel risks such as medical emergencies and trip disruptions.
Significantly, travelers aged 60 and above now represent 25% of all buyers. This demographic shift is driving a higher demand for comprehensive medical coverage, including for pre-existing conditions, as families opt for longer international stays together. Group wedding travel is also rebounding, with a 28% surge in bookings in 2025 year-to-date, further boosting the need for family and group insurance plans.
