Indian Markets Hit 25-Year Low Amid Global Turmoil
5 Oct
Summary
- Indian equity markets experienced an eight-week losing streak, the longest in 25 years.
- Weak global cues, oil prices, and foreign outflows hit the markets hard.
- Nearly ₹15 lakh crore was erased from market value in a single week.

Indian equity markets have entered an unprecedented period of decline, marking an eight-week consecutive losing streak, the longest observed in 25 years. This trend culminated in a holiday-shortened week where both benchmark indices experienced their most significant weekly drops in several months. The market's vulnerability was amplified by a confluence of negative factors, including weak global economic signals, elevated crude oil prices stemming from renewed Middle East tensions, rising global bond yields, continuous outflows of foreign capital, and a depreciating rupee.
The Nifty 50 index saw a substantial fall of 718.55 points, closing at 22,421.95, a decline of 3.10 percent for the week. Broader market indices also suffered, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices declining by 3.5 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. The cumulative effect of this selloff was a staggering erosion of approximately ₹15 lakh crore from the combined market capitalization of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange during the week.
All sectoral indices, with the exception of Nifty IT which saw a modest gain of 0.5 percent, ended in the red. The Consumer Durables sector was the hardest hit, plunging 6 percent, followed closely by the Auto sector, which fell 5.8 percent. Other sectors like Metal, FMCG, and PSU Bank indices each shed over 4 percent, while Realty, Healthcare, Infra, and Oil & Gas indices saw declines of more than 3 percent. Foreign institutional investors accelerated their selling pace, offloading ₹34,966.07 crore in their sixth consecutive week of net sales.
Looking ahead, the market appears oversold after the prolonged decline. Technical indicators suggest Nifty is at a critical juncture, with a bearish head-and-shoulders pattern potentially signaling a further sharp sell-off. Crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East conflict are key factors that will likely influence market sentiment. While Nifty has broken down from a rising wedge pattern, it is approaching a crucial support zone. A positive close above this level could pave the way for a near-term recovery, though broader market breadth indicators across various timeframes (20-day, 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day EMAs) show widespread weakness.
