Indian Markets End Modestly Up Amid Earnings, Global Tensions
10 Aug
Summary
- Indian equity benchmarks closed with modest gains on Monday.
- US-Iran conflict and monsoon progress are key investor concerns.
- Nifty surpassed 24,550, driven by private banks and durables.

Equity benchmarks in India finished Monday with slight increases, with investors closely monitoring Q1 FY27 earnings reports. Market caution persisted due to the recent introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism, which had previously increased trading volatility. Geopolitical developments concerning the US-Iran conflict and the progress of the monsoon also contributed to investor apprehension, influencing crude oil prices and limiting market upside.
The Nifty 50 index closed above 24,550, buoyed by strong performances in private banks and consumer durables. Conversely, declines in public sector banks and oil & gas sectors tempered the market's overall gains. The S&P BSE Sensex saw a minor increase, closing at 78,542.44, while the Nifty 50 reached 24,583.80. In broader market indices, the BSE 150 MidCap Index saw a marginal rise, and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index experienced a slight uptick.
Globally, European stocks mostly declined amid rising US-Iran tensions, while Asian markets showed mixed results. US stocks advanced on Friday following a weaker-than-expected US jobs report, which reduced expectations for an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. Iran's progress on establishing new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz remained a focal point, with conditions set for its reopening. Meanwhile, Bank of Japan policymakers signaled potential rate hikes due to inflation risks.
