China's Exit Fuels Optical Fiber Boom for India
12 Aug
Summary
- US restrictions on Chinese optical fiber boost Indian firms.
- Sterlite Technologies and HFCL see surging demand and revenue.
- AI workloads drive higher bandwidth, increasing fiber needs.

Recent US import restrictions on Chinese optical fiber cables have created a substantial advantage for Indian manufacturers. Sterlite Technologies and HFCL are poised to be major beneficiaries as global data center demand, fueled by Artificial Intelligence, continues to surge.
Sterlite Technologies reported an 87% year-on-year revenue growth to ₹1,910 crore in Q1FY27, with EBITDA increasing by 184%. The company also achieved its target EBITDA margin of 20.8% early and became net debt-free.
HFCL, similarly, saw its Q1FY27 revenue from operations jump by 119.9% to ₹1,915 crore, with a remarkable 937% growth in EBITDA. The company's export revenue reached ₹1,063 crore, representing 56% of its total revenue.
Both companies have strong order books exceeding ₹20,000 crore (Sterlite) and ₹26,665 crore (HFCL). They are increasingly focusing on the high-growth US market, driven by the expansion of hyperscale data centers and localized manufacturing efforts.
Despite strong performance, both stocks trade at high valuations, reflecting significant near-term optimism. The key challenge remains translating this demand into sustained earnings and improved return ratios.
