India's Banks Fortify Against AI-Driven Cyberattacks
23 Jul
Summary
- Banks collaborate with 25 OEMs on AI risk mitigation strategies.
- Regulator identifies AI cyber threats as top systemic risk.
- Defensive AI agents deployed to reduce network attack surface.

Indian banks have identified 25 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for strategic partnerships to mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence models. This move comes as the banking regulator has flagged AI-enabled cyber threats as the foremost systemic risk to the domestic financial sector.
A working group, led by the State Bank of India and including representatives from nine banks, the finance ministry, the RBI, NPCI, and CERT-In, is developing a comprehensive framework. This framework aims to help lenders identify potential vulnerabilities and enhance their defenses against cyberattacks.
Banks are being advised to reduce their network attack surface area, partly through the deployment of defensive AI agents. The challenge lies in supply chain vulnerabilities, where weak vendors or third-party components, including AI-generated code, can introduce flaws. These flaws can propagate across multiple financial institutions that rely on similar embedded components.
