India's wood products market, valued at $17.2 billion in 2024, is highly fragmented but presents significant investment opportunities. The plywood segment is projected to reach ₹39,190 crore by 2034. A rising trend is the demand for modular furniture, increasing the need for engineered wood products like MDF and particle board due to their suitability for factory-based processing and decorative finishes.
Greenply Industries is diversifying into MDF and furniture fittings, with MDF revenue up 32.8% YoY in Q1 FY27. Pre-laminated board revenue also saw substantial growth, indicating a move towards modular applications. However, its furniture fittings venture remains a loss-making drag.
Century Plyboards is also expanding its engineered wood offerings, particularly particle board, which saw revenue surge by 156.6% YoY in Q1 FY27. While particle board EBITDA turned positive, demonstrating proof of demand, profitability is yet to be established.
Both companies face risks including volatile timber and chemical prices, intense competition, and distribution challenges. The investment case hinges on effective execution, with Century Plyboards trading at a premium and Greenply at a lower valuation hurdle, requiring demonstration of sustained earnings growth and improved profitability.
