13 Jul
Summary
- India-US trade deal framework is ready for signing.
- India seeks tariff advantage over competitor nations.
- USTR proposed 12.5% tariff on imports from India.

Negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States are advancing positively, with an official confirming that a framework deal is prepared for signing when the time is right. India is specifically aiming to secure a comparative advantage on tariffs compared to its global competitors. This progress occurs amidst discussions following a meeting between India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The US Trade Representative (USTR) has initiated Section 301 investigations concerning forced labor and excess industrial capacity, proposing a 12.5% tariff on imports from 54 economies, including India. This proposal, which is not yet finalized, is a significant point of discussion. India is engaged with the USTR on these matters, awaiting the draft report on excess capacity, which is expected to take several months to conclude.
Officials from both sides emphasize a lack of dissent and a clear understanding of each other's expectations. India's bilateral trade with the US is growing, including an increase in energy imports. Minister Goyal has clarified that the teams are fully engaged in developing a trade pact that offers balanced, commercially meaningful benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both countries.
