India Eyes 100% Ethanol Blending Amid Energy Crisis

India is aspiring towards 100% ethanol blending in its fuel mix, a move critical for achieving energy self-sufficiency. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized this goal, noting the current energy crisis fueled by West Asian conflicts and India's heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, which cost Rs 22 lakh crore annually. This reliance not only strains finances but also contributes to pollution, underscoring the urgent need for alternative and bio-fuel development.

Green hydrogen has been identified as a pivotal fuel for the future. To realize its potential, Gadkari stressed the importance of reducing production costs to achieve $1 per kilogram, enabling India to become an energy exporter. He also pointed out the logistical challenges in transporting hydrogen and advocated for its production from waste materials. The minister further suggested that embracing a circular economy model can stimulate employment opportunities. While acknowledging the need to discourage petrol and diesel vehicle usage, he noted that a direct ban on their purchase is not feasible for the public.
