Institutional investment in India's real estate sector saw a sharp decrease of 62% during the first quarter of 2026, totaling USD 1.41 billion from the previous quarter. This decline occurred amidst geopolitical concerns stemming from the West Asia conflict.
Despite the quarterly drop, investments rose by 74% compared to the same period last year, indicating sustained investor confidence in India's real estate market. Commercial assets, encompassing office, retail, and hospitality, dominated investment activity, capturing an 80% share.
Investment in commercial properties reached USD 1.12 billion in Q1 2026, a substantial increase from USD 307.2 million in the prior year's quarter. Conversely, residential asset investments declined by 53% quarter-on-quarter and 59% year-on-year, settling at USD 205.9 million.
Vestian CEO Shrinivas Rao noted the sector's resilience, highlighting that domestic investments are supporting market momentum as foreign participation moderates. GCC-led demand continues to bolster commercial assets, reinforcing India's long-term investment appeal.
