Unseasonal Rains Chill India's Power Demand Growth
1 Apr
Summary
- March peak power demand rose slightly to 238.37 GW.
- Power consumption grew 1.8% in March due to unseasonal rains.
- Summer power demand forecast revised down due to delayed heat.

India's peak power demand saw a marginal rise in March 2025, reaching 238.37 GW, up slightly from February's 235.22 GW. However, overall power consumption grew by a modest 1.8% year-on-year in March, a slowdown attributed to unseasonal rains across the country. These rains kept temperatures lower than usual, delaying the typical summer surge in demand for cooling appliances.
Despite the dip in demand, the peak power demand in May 2024 had previously hit an all-time high of approximately 250 GW. The government had estimated this year's summer peak demand at 270 GW. However, meteorologists report that March experienced more western disturbances than average, contributing to lower maximum temperatures nationwide.
Experts predict a continued subdued growth in power consumption and demand for April, as the delayed arrival of summer persists. The India Meteorological Department forecasts normal to below-normal maximum temperatures in many regions for April, though some areas in east, northeast, and northwest India might experience higher temperatures.
