Summary
- New work visas allow up to 5,000 Indian workers in New Zealand.
- Expanded post-study work rights for Indian graduates are included.
- The deal covers specific professions like engineers, nurses, and chefs.
The Free Trade Agreement between India and New Zealand is now active, establishing two new work visa pathways for Indian citizens. These visas, the India Iconic Work Visa and the India Skilled Work Visa, collectively allow for up to 5,000 Indian nationals to be in New Zealand at any given time. The program specifically targets skilled occupations such as engineers, nurses, IT professionals, yoga instructors, and chefs, provided they have an offer from an accredited employer.
Beyond these work visas, the FTA includes significant benefits for Indian students and graduates. Effective November 16, 2026, Indian graduates holding New Zealand PhDs will benefit from an extended post-study work visa duration of up to four years, an increase from the current three years. Furthermore, the agreement formalizes a commitment to 20 hours of work per week for Indian students during their studies, enhancing their opportunities and stability in New Zealand.
