The National Statistics Office (NSO) has announced plans to conduct a significant Survey on Migration. This survey is scheduled to take place from July 2026 through June 2027.
The forthcoming survey will gather extensive data on migration within India. It will cover both rural-urban and inter-state movements, detailing reasons for migration, return migration, and seasonal migration patterns. Information on the employment profiles of migrants will also be collected.
Recent data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2020-21 revealed a migration rate of 28.9% across India. This survey highlighted significant gender differences in migration drivers.
For female migrants, marriage was the predominant reason, accounting for approximately 86.8%. In contrast, male migration was primarily driven by the search for employment or better job opportunities, representing 22.8% of all male migrants. These statistics underscore the socially and economically influenced nature of migration in India.
The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation oversees such surveys. The results are crucial for understanding labour mobility and remittance flows, aiding policymakers in urban planning, housing, employment generation, and skill development initiatives.
