Summary
- New business premium rose 20.7% in July 2026.
- Policy count growth remained almost flat at 0.9%.
- Group single premium business significantly drove premium increases.

India's life insurance industry reported a significant 20.7% increase in new business premiums for July 2026, collecting ₹47,004.84 crore compared to the previous year. This substantial premium growth was largely driven by a 30.9% surge in industry-wide group single-premium business, which reached ₹27,857.01 crore.
In contrast to premium expansion, the total number of policies and schemes saw a marginal 0.9% increase, rising to 22.98 lakh. This divergence highlights the impact of higher-value group policies on overall premium figures, while individual non-single premiums grew by a more moderate 8.6%.
State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) spearheaded the industry's performance, with its first-year premium growing by 23.8% to ₹27,993.61 crore. This growth was significantly supported by a 31.5% rise in LIC's group single premium collections.
Collectively, private life insurers also witnessed a 16.3% rise in first-year premiums. Unlike LIC, private insurers also achieved a 5.9% growth in policy volumes. For the first four months of the current financial year, the industry's first-year premium increased by 17.5% to ₹1.56 lakh crore.
