India's Inflation Surges to Highest Since January
15 Sep
Summary
- Retail inflation climbed to 4.8% in August, a five-month high.
- Wholesale inflation rose significantly to 9.9% in August.
- Food inflation increased to 6%, impacting rural areas most.
India experienced a notable increase in price pressures during August, as retail inflation accelerated to 4.8%, marking its highest point since January. Concurrently, wholesale inflation saw a significant rise, reaching 9.9% year-on-year. This surge in inflation, particularly in food prices which climbed to 6%, has raised concerns among economists.
Higher inflation in fuel and power, alongside manufactured products, contributed to the climb in wholesale prices. Food inflation was particularly pronounced in rural areas, exceeding urban rates. These trends have led to expectations of potential interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its upcoming monetary policy meetings.
The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to convene next from October 5-7. While some economists predict rate hikes starting as early as October, others anticipate a "wait-and-watch" approach with hikes possibly occurring in December or February. Elevated crude oil prices and generalized inflationary pressures could influence the RBI's decision.
