India Health Insurance: Digital Rise, Affordability Woes
2 Mar
Summary
- Only 50% of Indian insurers customize plans for large clients.
- Telehealth is offered by 83% of insurers, with minimal claim impact.
- Awareness and affordability remain significant challenges in India.

India's health insurance market is undergoing significant digital transformation and coverage expansion, yet faces persistent challenges in awareness, standardization, and affordability. A recent report indicates that around 50% of insurers provide customization for clients with over 1,000 employees, a figure notably lower than in countries like China.
Telehealth services have seen widespread adoption, with 83% of surveyed insurers offering them. Despite this, the financial impact on outpatient claims remains modest, with only a third of insurers reporting cost savings between 1.1% and 1.5%. Employee assistance programs (EAPs) have also expanded, though utilization rates are inconsistent and deeper localization is needed for sustained engagement.
Experts suggest that while insurers are innovating and expanding services, there is a critical need for stronger partnerships and enhanced client education to unlock greater value from digital investments and address rising expectations from both employers and employees.
