- Economy shows strong domestic consumption despite global challenges.
India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections experienced a significant year-on-year increase of 22.9% in October, amounting to ₹2.31 lakh crore. This surge suggests strong consumer spending during the festive season, defying challenges like rising inflation and interest rates, as well as a difficult global economic climate.
Supporting this positive economic narrative, other high-frequency indicators showed remarkable growth. Passenger car sales hit an all-time high, exceeding 525,000 units, a 14% rise from the previous year. Digital payment transactions recorded a 23% increase, with their transaction value growing 16% to ₹31.53 lakh crore. Power consumption also saw a substantial rise of nearly 22%.
Net GST collections, after accounting for refunds, climbed 25.6% to ₹2.03 lakh crore in October, with total refunds increasing by 6.5%. This sustained growth in domestic GST collections, alongside a notable 42.2% rise in collections from imports, signals a strong start to the third quarter of the fiscal year.
Experts suggest this economic robustness is likely to continue, driven by India's domestic consumption. The nation's economy grew at a faster-than-expected 7.8% in the June quarter, leading to upward revisions in growth forecasts by international agencies. This resilience highlights India's growing economic maturity and its capacity to navigate global uncertainties.
