Gas Shortage Fuels Induction Cooker Boom
10 Apr
Summary
- Induction cooker demand may rise 30-40% due to gas supply issues.
- Government delays mandatory star labelling for cooktops to January 2027.
- LPG supply is pressured by the ongoing Iran war and import dependence.

India is bracing for a substantial increase in induction cooker demand, with projections indicating a 30% to 40% rise. This surge is directly linked to households transitioning towards cleaner cooking solutions due to ongoing gas supply shortages. The anticipated demand boost could translate to an additional 13-27 GW of power consumption.
Government bodies, including the Power Ministry and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, are engaged in discussions with electric cooktop manufacturers to address challenges in scaling up production. As a proactive measure, the mandatory star labelling for induction cooktops, initially set for July 1, 2026, has been deferred to January 1, 2027, to accommodate the expected demand increase. Annually, India currently sees sales of approximately one crore induction cooktops.
The underlying cause for this shift is a significant pressure on LPG supplies, exacerbated by the geopolitical situation related to the Iran war. With India relying on imports for nearly 60% of its LPG needs, domestic consumers are being prioritized, ensuring 100% supply for household use. Officials report robust LPG distribution networks and high digital adoption for bookings and deliveries, with online bookings at 98% and OTP-based deliveries at 92%.
