India Restricts Gold, Platinum, Silver Jewelry Imports
2 Apr
Summary
- Government imposed immediate curbs on gold, platinum, and silver jewelry imports.
- Restrictions aim to prevent misuse of Free Trade Agreements by importers.
- Imports by export-oriented units and SEZs remain exempt from new rules.

Effective immediately, India has imposed curbs on imports of gold, platinum, and silver jewelry. This decision by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) aims to prevent the exploitation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) by some importers.
These new restrictions apply universally, regardless of existing contracts or shipment statuses. The policy revision from 'Free' to 'Restricted' for customs tariff heading 7113 means importers now require specific permission or a license. This action follows previous curbs on platinum and silver jewelry imports implemented in late 2025.
However, imports by 100% Export Oriented Units and businesses within Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are exempt. Similarly, imports under specific export schemes for Gems and Jewellery are also not affected by these new regulations, allowing designated export-focused operations to continue unimpeded.
