India Cracks Down on Fake Medicines with QR Codes

India's Health Ministry has advanced its regulatory framework by expanding Schedule H2 drug tracking to encompass entire therapeutic classes, a significant shift from its previous brand-specific approach. This initiative, building upon the 2022-23 introduction of QR codes for verifying drug authenticity, now demands encoding of product identifiers, manufacturing license numbers, and batch details to aid in identifying and recalling defective batches.

This enhanced tracking system is a direct response to the pervasive issue of counterfeit medicines, particularly affecting vaccines, cancer treatments, and antimicrobials. Such fakes pose a severe threat, especially in low- and middle-income nations, contributing to antimicrobial resistance in countries like India.
