India Bonds Brace for RBI Rate Decision Amidst Global Shocks
2 Jun
Summary
- Indian government bonds showed little change ahead of the RBI policy decision.
- Economists anticipate the RBI will maintain current interest rates.
- India's economy faces risks from energy shocks and a weak monsoon.

Indian government bonds experienced minimal fluctuations on Tuesday, with yields remaining largely stable. This cautious trading environment persisted as market participants looked ahead to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) upcoming monetary policy announcement. The central bank's decision is anticipated to be challenging, influenced by escalating energy prices and a less favorable monsoon season.
While nearly 80% of economists surveyed by Reuters predict the RBI will hold its key repo rate at 5.25%, a minority of institutions foresee a potential hike. The RBI is also expected to revise its inflation and growth projections for the 2026-2027 fiscal year to account for the impact of ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The nation's reliance on imported crude oil, accounting for nearly 90% of its needs, heightens its vulnerability to external energy price shocks.
Market indicators such as overnight indexed swap rates eased, reflecting a slight decrease in oil and U.S. Treasury yields. However, concerns about the economy persist, with growth forecasts for the January-March quarter anticipated to be lower than previously expected. The rupee has also seen a decline, reaching record lows since the onset of the Iran war.
