India Banks Cut Staff: Tech Powers Efficiency
19 Aug
Summary
- Top private banks reduced employee numbers by 10,114 in FY26.
- Technology enables business expansion without increased manpower.
- Midsize lenders, however, saw an increase in their workforce.

India's prominent private banks are implementing significant workforce reductions, a notable shift after substantial hiring in recent years. The combined employee count for the top 10 private banks decreased by 10,114 in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, following a reduction of 9,637 in the previous year.
This contraction marks a reversal from fiscal year 2024, when these banks collectively added over 83,000 employees. The current trend, where technology-led efficiencies, automation, and AI are enabling business expansion without proportional staff increases, is particularly pronounced in the four largest private lenders. These institutions reduced their headcount by 14,364 in fiscal year 2026.
Conversely, several midsize lenders, including Federal Bank and IndusInd Bank, expanded their workforces during the same period. Banks are strategically redeploying talent from back-end operations to customer-facing roles, leveraging technology to boost productivity. The full impact of AI on headcount reduction is anticipated to become more visible in the coming year, as current applications focus on improving processing speeds.
The reduction in manpower has not hindered physical distribution networks, with the top four lenders expanding their branch and business-center presence. Banks have concurrently accelerated the deployment of AI and automation, with tools supporting employees, resolving queries, and automating processes, leading to significant productivity gains.
