IMF Chief: Cut Debt Now, Costs Skyrocket!
23 Sep
Summary
- IMF head urges advanced economies to reduce borrowing.
- Government interest costs have surged due to global shocks.
- AI development competition adds to bond market pressure.
Kristalina Georgieva, head of the International Monetary Fund, has issued a stark warning to advanced economies like the UK and US, emphasizing the critical need to reduce borrowing and debt. She stated that escalating government interest costs, exacerbated by global economic shocks such as supply chain disruptions and inflation fueled by conflicts, demand immediate government intervention. Georgieva stressed that political leaders must demonstrate 'courage' to implement necessary fiscal consolidation measures.
These calls come as government borrowing costs have surged. In the UK, borrowing reached £18.3bn in August, with debt interest payments hitting a record high for the month. The US, the world's largest economy, faces a debt exceeding $40tn, having doubled in a decade. Georgieva advised advanced economies to prioritize bringing debt levels down and ensure central banks maintain price stability, noting that growth stimulation must rely on reforms to encourage private sector investment.
Furthermore, Georgieva pointed to competition in the bond market, partly driven by significant investments in artificial intelligence development, as another factor pushing up yields. She also cited potential financial stability risks associated with AI, particularly if systems become uncontrollable. The IMF head reiterated the dual challenges facing the global economy: energy price shocks and AI investment, underscoring the importance of a durable resumption of oil and gas exports for normalization.
