Ilfracombe Gets 16 New Affordable Homes
12 Apr
Summary
- Sixteen affordable homes will be built on a derelict nursery site.
- The homes will be available for social rent, offering lower prices.
- Construction is underway and expected completion by spring 2027.

Sixteen affordable homes for local residents are currently under construction at the former Bicclescombe Nursery site in Ilfracombe, Devon. The development, spearheaded by housing association Aster Group in partnership with Ilfracombe Community Land Trust, will provide properties for social rent.
This initiative aims to combat the 'housing crisis' Ilfracombe has experienced, offering genuinely affordable housing options. The 16 units will comprise eight two-bedroom houses, two three-bedroom houses, and six one-bedroom maisonettes. Funding for the project has been secured through Homes England's Affordable Homes Programme and a £500,000 contribution from the UK government's One Public Estate programme.
Construction commenced in March and is scheduled for completion by the end of spring 2027. This development is seen as a crucial step in addressing the town's critical housing needs, particularly in light of recent reports indicating significant income hardship and child poverty in Ilfracombe town centre. Local officials have welcomed the project, describing the transformation of the derelict site as 'wonderful' for the community.
