The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) announced a record-breaking August 2026, with monthly electricity traded volume soaring to 13,938 Million Units (MUs). This figure represents a substantial 20.2% increase compared to the same period last year.
This surge in trading activity aligns with broader energy trends in India. Government data revealed that the nation's overall energy consumption reached 169.01 Billion Units (BUs) in August 2026, indicating a healthy 12.85% year-on-year growth.
The heightened power demand directly influenced market dynamics. Buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market saw a significant uplift of 61.7% year-on-year. Consequently, the average market clearing price in this segment rose by 22% to Rs 4.88 per unit.
Similar upward price trends were observed in other market segments. The Real-Time Market recorded an average clearing price of Rs 4.41 per unit, a 30.4% increase from the previous year. IEX's Green Market, encompassing Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead segments, also saw growth, trading 1,091 MUs, a 17.3% rise year-on-year.
However, the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) market experienced a significant downturn, with approximately 2.91 lakh RECs traded, an 86.6% decrease year-on-year due to reduced participation. Trading sessions occurred on August 12, 2026, and August 27, 2026, at clearing prices of Rs 370/REC and Rs 350/REC, respectively.
