Wakefield's Iconic Mall Faces Demolition
21 Feb
Summary
- The Ridings was Britain's first mall with US-inspired features.
- It was named European Shopping Centre of the Year for a decade.
- The mall faces demolition for a new city living and leisure quarter.
The Ridings shopping centre in Wakefield, a symbol of pioneering ambition, is set to be demolished. Opened in 1983, it was Britain's first mall to incorporate features inspired by American shopping centres, including an expansive food court and a distinctive glass lift descending into a fish pond. Its innovative design and community focus brought considerable success, earning it the title of European Shopping Centre of the Year for a decade.
Despite its initial triumphs, the centre's dominance waned with the rise of larger competitors like Meadowhall and White Rose Centre. By 2011, further competition from Trinity Walk led to its developers pulling out. Now, Wakefield Council plans to flatten the ageing mall to create a new urban quarter for living, leisure, and events, a project described as a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' to transform the city centre.
