Palisade Seats Collide: SUV Recall Over Fatal Flaw
24 Mar
Summary
- 58,000 Hyundai Palisade SUVs recalled nationwide due to seat safety.
- A fatal accident involving a child led to the U.S. recall.
- Software flaw in seat controllers failed to detect occupants.

South Korea's transport ministry has ordered the recall of 58,000 Hyundai Palisade hybrid SUVs due to safety issues. This decision came after a two-year-old girl in Ohio died on March 7 when her automatic seat allegedly collapsed. This incident prompted Hyundai to halt sales and recall 68,500 new Palisade SUVs in the United States and Canada.
Investigations revealed that the second- and third-row seats in the Palisade SUVs failed to detect occupants or objects because of a software flaw in the seat controllers. South Korea reported two passenger injuries in October and December last year possibly linked to this problem. As an interim measure, Hyundai began offering software updates on Friday to make the automatic-folding function easier to disable.
The software update allows users to turn off the automatic-folding function with a single switch, even while the car is on. Previously, disabling the feature required turning the car off and on again. The update will also restrict the power seat function's activation to when the tailgate is open, enhancing overall safety for Palisade owners.
