Chapati Vanishes: Hyderabad's LPG Crisis Hits Food Staples
12 Mar
Summary
- Hostels in Hyderabad's IT corridor have removed chapatis from menus.
- The LPG shortage forces hostels to serve rice-based meals instead.
- An association requested priority LPG supply for hostels.

A severe commercial LPG shortage in Hyderabad has forced numerous hostels and paying guest accommodations to alter their meal services. Staple items like chapatis have been removed from menus, with purish and dosas also being avoided due to higher LPG consumption. Dishes such as rajma and chickpea curries have been temporarily dropped.
Hostels are now focusing on rice-based meals and simpler options like upma, pongal, vegetable curry, and dal to manage cooking gas supply. This shift has impacted thousands of students and working professionals, particularly in IT hubs like Madhapur and Gachibowli. The IT Corridor Hostels Association, representing approximately 300,000 individuals, has advised its members to rationalize menus and limit beverages like tea and coffee.
The association is appealing to the central government to designate hostels as a priority sector for commercial LPG distribution to ensure adequate availability. The crisis affects an estimated 10 lakh students and professionals across 11,000 hostels in Hyderabad, with residents expressing difficulty adjusting to the new, limited meal options.
