HumeLink Towers Rise: Powering Australia's Future
17 Dec
Summary
- First transmission towers erected near Wagga Wagga.
- Project aims to integrate renewable energy sources into the grid.
- New network will boost electricity transmission capacity across eastern Australia.

The HumeLink high-voltage electricity transmission project has commenced full-scale construction, with the initial two transmission towers erected at Book Book, near Wagga Wagga. This A$1.4bn undertaking spans 365km of new transmission lines connecting Wagga Wagga, Bannaby, and Maragle in regional New South Wales, with the western phase alone covering 148km of 500kV lines and new substations.
Managed by a UGL and CPB Contractors joint venture, HumeLink is designed to bolster electricity transmission capacity across eastern Australia. It will integrate renewable energy sources, such as Snowy 2.0, into the National Electricity Market. The project requires over 800 towers, substantial structural steel, and extensive high-voltage cabling to achieve its goals.
This development is a key part of modernizing New South Wales' electricity network. UGL and CPB Contractors were appointed in December 2023 to deliver this significant portion of the project, focusing on safely erecting the remaining towers and engaging with local communities for shared benefits.
