HSBC Eyes Nuvama in $1.8B India Wealth Buyout Race
1 Sep
Summary
- HSBC competes with global PE firms for Nuvama Wealth, valued at $1.8 billion.
- PAG, Nuvama's owner, seeks to sell its 53.98% stake after a previous attempt failed.
- Acquisition aims to tap into India's growing investment and spending appetite.

HSBC is actively competing with major global private equity firms, such as PAG, Brookfield, and Warburg Pincus, for the acquisition of Nuvama Wealth and Investment Ltd. PAG, the current owner holding a 53.98% stake, has restarted efforts to sell the Indian financial services company. The stake is valued at approximately ₹17,336 crore ($1.8 billion) based on Nuvama's current market capitalization of ₹32,116 crore. This transaction also necessitates an open offer for an additional 26% of the company's shares.
The competition for Nuvama highlights investors' keenness to capitalize on India's burgeoning investment and spending landscape. This bidding process is reminiscent of events in 2025, when a sale was hindered by regulatory concerns involving a key client. Nuvama's stock has shown volatility, with a significant rise from ₹1,200 in late August 2025 to ₹1,805 by August 28, 2026. The company also underwent a 1:5 stock split last November. PAG initially invested $325 million for a majority stake in Edelweiss Wealth Management, which was rebranded as Nuvama, in March 2021. Industry observers suggest that the substantial investment required might encourage potential buyers to form consortiums, similar to past deals. Some contenders are also considering acquiring specific business segments rather than the entire entity, which includes wealth management, capital markets, asset services, and asset management.
