Work has commenced on a significant deck structure at Birmingham's new Curzon Street HS2 station. This essential deck will support the station's seven planned platforms. The initial phase involves lifting the first of more than 550 large concrete beams, some measuring up to 34 meters and weighing as much as 58 tonnes.
These beams are being produced at a factory in Ireland, with deliveries timed for early morning arrivals. The construction site has seen the completion of an 8-meter high wall, and teams will soon relocate to a new temporary office. A substantial 47,000 cubic meters of material has been excavated to prepare a level base for the platforms.
At its peak, the Curzon Street project is expected to employ over 1,000 people. The high-speed rail line between London and Birmingham is now slated for an opening between 2036 and 2039. HS2 is undertaking a 'fundamental reset' of the programme, led by chief executive Mark Wild, to ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery of the project, despite estimated costs reaching up to £102.7 billion.
