Heineken 0.0 Ultimate, a new non-alcoholic beer with zero sugar and zero calories, has been released by the brewing giant. Initially piloted in 2025, this innovative beverage is now being distributed across select US states, including New York, Texas, and Florida. The company aims to expand its presence in the booming non-alcoholic market.
This latest offering follows Heineken's 2019 launch of Heineken 0.0, which was alcohol-free but contained sugar and calories. The new 'Ultimate' version promises world-class taste with no alcohol, sugar, or calories, prompting consumer curiosity and debate about its classification as beer. Traditional brewing methods inherently produce calories and carbohydrates from grains, making a zero-calorie beer a complex endeavor.
Competitors also offer non-alcoholic options, though they typically contain some calories and carbohydrates. For instance, Budweiser Zero has 50 calories per serving, and Michelob Ultra Zero contains 29 calories and 6g of carbohydrates. Heineken describes its new lager as having soft fruity notes and a delicate malty body, achieved through a double-brewing process to remove alcohol.
Consumer reactions on social media have been mixed, with some enjoying the taste while others question its composition. Comparisons have been made to hop water, a flavored beverage featuring hops. Despite the debate, the demand for non-alcoholic alternatives is increasing, with US sales of non-alcoholic beer surging significantly between 2021 and 2025, now representing 2.5 percent of total beer products.
