AI Hedge Fund $24B Unravels Amidst Tech Bet Losses

Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund, Situational Awareness, has fully unwound its investment portfolio, which previously managed between $20 billion and $24 billion in assets. The fund suffered substantial losses from its investments in AI infrastructure companies and its short positions against software companies. Publicly disclosed holdings, including those in Nebius and SanDisk, saw declines exceeding 35% during July. The broader technology market also weakened, with the Nasdaq 100 falling about 10% in July, adding further pressure.

Banks such as Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase provided assistance to the fund in managing its positions and meeting margin requirements. These institutions helped the fund reduce its holdings in an orderly fashion, avoiding a forced sell-off. In addition to market pressures, the fund also explored raising fresh capital from existing investors and lenders and offered parts of its portfolio directly to some investors in an ad hoc manner.

Specific investments that impacted the fund included a substantial position tied to Nvidia, valued at $1.57 billion. The fund's strategy also involved put options, though details regarding strike prices or leverage were not disclosed, making their exact purpose as bearish bets or hedges unclear.
