Gujarat's Salt Moves by Rail in New Containers

India's freight infrastructure is expanding with the addition of five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs) in Gujarat. These terminals, including the newly inaugurated Shivlakha GCT, are designed to bolster rail-based freight movement and strengthen links to industrial centers, ports, and markets. With these additions, the total number of operational Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals nationwide has now reached 150.
A significant focus is placed on enhancing rail transport for Gujarat's salt production. New, lightweight stainless steel containers have been developed specifically for carrying salt, featuring top-loading and side-unloading capabilities to streamline operations and mitigate moisture absorption issues during transit.
In other major infrastructure news, the Vapi-Surat section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is slated for completion by December 2026. This marks a crucial milestone for the indigenous high-speed train development, with the first coach of India's own high-speed train already prepared and undergoing testing.
Furthermore, Kachchh district in Gujarat is undergoing substantial railway development, with projects worth approximately Rs 5,600 crore underway. These initiatives include capacity augmentation and line doubling on key routes, aimed at supporting both industrial and defense needs, as well as improving general connectivity for residents in the region.
