Gujarat's Fish Exports Soar to ₹6,000 Crore

Gujarat's fisheries sector is witnessing a remarkable surge, with fish export values climbing from ₹625 crore in 2001 to more than ₹6,000 crore by 2023-24. This near tenfold increase positions the state as a major player in India's marine economy. Leveraging its extensive 2,340 km coastline, Gujarat is now the country's second-largest marine fish producer, averaging 8.56 lakh metric tonne annually over the last four years.

The Dholai Port in Navsari exemplifies this growth, with hundreds of boats arriving daily, supporting livelihoods for fishermen and a network of women traders. The government's commitment is further demonstrated by a ₹1,622 crore fisheries package. This initiative focuses on boosting shrimp production, expanding cold storage, and developing processing units to modernize marine infrastructure and enhance the value chain.

This investment aims to modernize marine infrastructure and improve the entire value chain, from catch to export. The increased activity has positively impacted local traders as well. Gujarat continues to champion its traditional fishing communities while cultivating a technologically advanced marine economy, generating fresh opportunities along its entire coastal belt.
