Summary

- Drone delivery offers a new competitive edge in the market.

Starting next week, Grubhub customers in Green Brook, New Jersey, will experience a novel food delivery method. In partnership with drone technology firm Dexa, Grubhub is launching a three-month pilot program to introduce aerial food delivery services.
Customers within a 2.5-mile radius of a specific Grubhub-owned location can choose drone delivery via the app. This option will incur standard delivery and service fees but no additional charges for the aerial transport. The service utilizes Dexa's DE-2020 aircraft, which lowers food orders using a cable.
This venture marks an expansion in the increasingly competitive autonomous delivery landscape, as companies like DoorDash and Uber Eats also pursue drone and robotic delivery collaborations. Dexa is among a select few U.S. companies with full federal aviation approval for its delivery drones.
Grubhub plans to evaluate the pilot program's outcomes. This assessment will inform decisions on extending drone delivery to more restaurant partners in the region. A public demonstration of the service is scheduled for March 16.
