US Wealth Transfer: $40 Trillion Heads to Older Women
17 Mar
Summary
- Older women to receive nearly $40 trillion from spouses.
- Total US wealth transfer between households projected at $124 trillion.
- High-net-worth households to account for over half of all transfers.

A massive wealth transfer is underway in the United States, with widowed women in the Baby Boomer generation and older set to receive nearly $40 trillion from their spouses over the next two decades. This is part of a broader projection by Cerulli Associates, estimating $124 trillion in assets will transfer between households between 2024 and 2048. Approximately $54 trillion of this will move between spouses before eventually reaching heirs or charities.
The concentration of wealth in the hands of older women reflects demographic realities, as women tend to outlive men. This shift places significant financial decision-making power in their hands, impacting investment portfolios and charitable giving strategies. Millennials are expected to inherit the largest total share, $46 trillion, over the next 25 years, though Gen X will see substantial near-term gains.
Remarkably, more than half of the total $124 trillion transfer, about $62 trillion, will originate from high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth households, which represent only about 2 percent of all US households. The annual inheritance amount is projected to rise significantly, from approximately $2.5 trillion currently to over $4 trillion annually by 2036.
